Calvin Velazques
ALL - Memorial Honoree
On April 30, 2013, at the tender age of six, Calvin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The need for treatment was immediate, and it began on May 12, 2013. Just a few months later the family was informed that the chemo was not working effectively, and a bone marrow transplant would be required. Unfortunately the first two donors found decided not to follow through with the procedure. Finally, in late August, Calvin was admitted to the hospital to begin prepping for transplant, after finding an unknown generous donor. On September 17th, Calvin received his bone marrow transplant and began the hardest part of his journey. Harsh chemo and radiation took a toll on his body, as it attempted to adjust the new given cells. During this time he remained in the hospital and underwent multiple procedures, liquid diets, and grueling pain from infections. Still, his cell counts slowly moved up, indicating the new cells were adjusting.
Through it all, the hope was never lost amidst the pain.In early December Calvin received the best news he could have hoped for – He was in full remission. Due to multiple complications, he remained hospitalized through the holiday season, but was released soon after! Every day he continued to improve, taking walks and slowly gaining his weight back. His hair grew back along with his beautiful long lashes. Slowly, he got back into this routine at home with his family.Although Calvin was in remission, he returned to the hospital multiple times due to seizures, high temperatures, infections and pneumonia. Hopeful and determined, Calvin returned home every time ready to get back to his life. He talked of going back to school, seeing friends and teachers, playing baseball and swimming again. Slowly, he gained the energy to ride his skateboard, kick his soccer ball and ride his bike. His sense of humor and love for books, puzzles and jokes never ceased.
On March 3, 2014 Calvin was admitted to the hospital for a minor discomfort. They soon found that his lungs were damaged beyond repair. Just two weeks later, at the age of seven, Calvin ended his journey as he took his last breath in his mother’s arms surrounded by love.
Through it all, Calvin never lost his love for life, appreciation for the little things and his sincere love. Calvin is truly loved and missed every day.
